How it is calculated

Zakat Due = 2.5% × (Total Zakatable Assets − Immediate Liabilities); Applicable only when Net Assets ≥ Nisab

Worked example: Calculating Annual Zakat on $25,000 Portfolio with $3,000 Current Debts

$15,000 cash, $5,000 gold, $5,000 stocks, $3,000 due credit card debt, Nisab $550.

  1. Sum all eligible assets: $15,000 + $5,000 + $5,000 = $25,000.
  2. Deduct immediate due liabilities: $25,000 − $3,000 = $22,000 net zakatable wealth.
  3. Check Nisab: $22,000 is greater than $550, confirming Zakat is due.
  4. Multiply net wealth by 2.5%: $22,000 × 0.025 = $550.00.

$550.00 Zakat payable for the lunar year.

How to Use This Calculator (Step-by-Step)

  1. Enter all bank balances, cash reserves, and emergency funds held for one full lunar year (Hawl).
  2. Value gold jewelry, coins, and bullion at current market prices.
  3. Add the market value of shares, crypto, or retail goods held for sale.
  4. Deduct outstanding utility bills, monthly rent due, or current debts due for immediate payment.
  5. Verify if your net wealth exceeds the silver or gold Nisab threshold and pay 2.5% to eligible recipients.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Nisab threshold?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth an individual must possess for one lunar year before becoming obligated to pay Zakat. It is based on 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.

Which Nisab threshold should I use?

Most contemporary Islamic scholars recommend using the silver Nisab standard (~$500 to $600) as it ensures more people qualify to help those in need.

Is my home or car included in zakatable wealth?

No. Assets for primary personal living, such as your main residence, family vehicle, and everyday personal furniture and clothing, are completely exempt from Zakat, so they are not among the asset inputs.

Which debts can I deduct?

Only immediate debts and bills due now, as the input label states. The formula subtracts immediate liabilities from total zakatable assets to reach net qualifying wealth, so longer-term obligations that are not yet due are not deducted here.

What happens if my net wealth is below the Nisab?

Then no Zakat is due from this calculation. The formula applies only when net assets are at or above the Nisab, and the calculator reports that Zakat is not obligatory when the threshold is not met.

Do I need to have held the wealth for a full year?

Yes. The how-to steps ask for bank balances, cash reserves, and emergency funds held for one full lunar year, known as Hawl, before the 2.5% rate is applied to net qualifying wealth.
