How it is calculated

Net Pay = Gross Pay − NHS Pension (5.2%–12.5%) − Income Tax (20%/40%) − Employee NI (8%)

Worked example: Band 5 Staff Nurse on Top Point (£34,581)

AfC Band 5 Top point £34,581 annual salary, no London weighting, 10.7% NHS Pension tier, Standard tax code 1257L.

  1. Calculate NHS pension deduction (Tier 10.7%): £34,581 × 10.7% = £3,700.17/yr (£308.35/month).
  2. Calculate taxable salary: £34,581 − £3,700.17 = £30,880.83.
  3. Compute Income Tax: (£30,880.83 − £12,570 personal allowance) × 20% = £3,662.17/yr (£305.18/month).
  4. Compute National Insurance (8% over £12,570): (£34,581 − £12,570) × 8% = £1,760.88/yr (£146.74/month).
  5. Deduct from gross: £34,581 − £3,700.17 − £3,662.17 − £1,760.88 = £25,457.78 net take-home per year (£2,121.48 per month).

Net take-home pay of £2,121.48 per month.

Frequently asked questions

Is the NHS Pension Scheme worth the monthly deduction?

The 2015 NHS Pension Scheme is an inflation-linked Defined Benefit CARE (Career Average Revalued Earnings) scheme, widely regarded as one of the most generous workplace pension schemes in the United Kingdom.

What is the London weighting for NHS staff?

Inner London staff receive a 20% supplement capped at £7,524; Outer London receives 15% capped at £5,114; and the Fringe zone receives 5% capped at £2,011.

What NHS pension tier will I pay?

Pension contributions range from 5.2% to 12.5% depending on pay, as the formula shows. In the worked example, a Band 5 top-point salary of 34,581 pounds sits in the 10.7% tier, giving a 3,700.17 pound annual deduction.

Why is take-home pay lower than gross pay divided by 12?

Because three deductions come off first: the NHS pension contribution, income tax, and employee National Insurance. In the worked example those three deductions turn 34,581 pounds gross into 25,457.78 pounds net per year.

How does a student loan change my take-home pay?

Select your repayment plan in the inputs: Plan 2 deducts 9% over 27,295 pounds, and a postgraduate loan deducts 6% over 21,000 pounds. Choosing none leaves the calculation without any student loan deduction.

What personal allowance is used for income tax?

The worked example uses the standard 1257L tax code, with a 12,570 pound personal allowance. Taxable salary is gross pay minus the pension contribution, and 20% tax applies to the amount above that allowance in the example.
